Tonight Jen and I broke out the Christmas decorations and dressed her wee tree (tree-wee).
What is it with colored lights and sparkly things that evoke a certain feeling of rapture?
1. Alarm goes off, nearly spill water cup on table (mattress is on the floor, getting used to difference in distances). Make it to the shower with one earplug (still) in.
2. Call Michelle to meet me at road, we’ll walk to work together. On cue, super glue DIES horrible death and rubber tip on one ear phone falls off. = Me searching for clear rubber tip while building up heat inside down jacket, wool hat, snow pants and sorels. Have to remove gloves to re-fasten tip. Drop glove. Twice.
3. Finally leave apartment, reach stairs, take off gloves to untangle earphone cord. Drop glove. Twice.
4. Meet (a frozen) Michelle on street who sweetly states she ‘hasn’t been waiting long at all’.
5. Ear phone cord freezes straight in -25 weather. Bend over to grab it as it drops from my ear, ball of snot falls directly out of nose (despite heavy sniffling) and onto snow pants.
6. Fumble for kleenex. No success because gloves are on. Take gloves off. Blow nose. Drop glove. Twice.
7. Arrive to work on time. With chapped hands.
8. Prep first OR patient. Forget to put in IV. Excellent.
9. Walk home, tired at end of shift, stop at Northmart. Pay sixteen million dollars for chocolate deep and delicious cake. Have large piece. World is right at last.
10. Bed.
A girlfriend and I had a little pre-December festive time this afternoon. We pulled out my old painting table, rolled out the brown packing paper, mixed a little paint, and carved some potato halves. What resulted was a home made gift wrap to rival any Martha creation. Her pup Ty laid idly by, rousing when our voices grew excited (because excited voices mean we’re talking about him) and wagging his big ol’ tail in almost-successful attempts to knock the half-full cups off the coffee table. Shortbreads baking in the oven and the one Christmas song collection I have playing in the background (good old Sarah McLachlen) made for an interesting atmosphere in my near-empty apartment. Probably the last time it will feel cozy in here. At any rate, we had a good time, ate shortbreads (she, a recent shortbread convert after tasting my cookies) and forgot about the dark and cold for a while.
I was lucky to attend my own going away party last night at a local restaurant. Once there, people just kept showing up. A reservation for 12 grew by adding one extra table…then two…then three. That made me feel wonderful.
This morning, we heard that my husband’s Gramps had passed. 7,000km from family in one direction…and a few thousand km’s away from him in another. That made me feel helpless.
The thought of working 5/7 days this week before flying out on the 8th makes me feel tired.
Besting all of those in breadth of emotion is the feeling I get while thinking about seeing Lee in one month as I get off the plane. That feeling can only be described as sublime.
On Ocean’s day 2008 I was down by the river observing the festivities…Lee’s camera in tow. And I noticed a coworker’s granddaughter hanging out with her grampa in a very special way. Shelia - enjoy these LATE pictures…hope they were worth the wait. She’s lovely…and THEY are lovely. (The top picture is my favorite…they are in their own little world).
