Frustration…at the end of a great conversation online with a good friend, I often feel a wave of affection. This wave comes from a sense of gratefulness for their contribution to my morning, evening…life; knowing that from where they stand, I am established, valued, appreciated. How do I express it? Talking to mum, a simple xo would do the trick. But ‘xo’ doesn’t work for every relationship I can’t picture myself kissing and hugging (at least kissing)…well, everyone.
So what then? Fall-backs include the smiley face, ‘cheers’, ciao, ‘later!’ - or worse, the high-school note-passer’s finest: ‘peace and love’ or ’smiles and sunshine’…WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?? Cute (or annoying) but meaningless. Surface. Bland. So the opposite of the emotion I intend to convey. So how do I conclude a conversation with a good friend without sacrificing meaning? Ideas include: ‘A’ for “affectionately but not awkwardly”, ‘R’ for “read: I appreciate you”, or saying something nerdy like ‘I enjoy your company’ or ‘once again, you’ve brightened my day’ or ‘I really like you’.
What I need is a shorthand method of putting those thoughts to pen. Until I figure it out, please accept dorky substitutes for the eloquent and affectionate thing I mean.
